BSME: Welcome
|
The British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) is one of the largest organisations for British Curriculum schools in the World, with seventy one schools in membership educating many thousands of children in thirteen countries and employing over 2,000 teachers.
To be able to apply for membership a school must be:
"An English Medium, essentially British Curriculum School in which the Principal / Head Teacher and the majority of teachers (apart from those teaching local languages) have qualifications recognised by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in London."
An important feature of BSME's calendar is our Annual Conference which has, over the years, been held in a variety of countries around the region. Top quality speakers address current developments in UK education and enable headteachers to update their knowledge and understanding of matters that impact upon learning and teaching. In addition, school leadership and management issues are discussed. Members also take the opportunity to discuss issues that arise out of being a British-style school in the Middle East region.
The Conference also features an exhibition of leading publishers and suppliers of educational and other relevant services. This is a highly valued part of each year's event.
A further service to members and parents seeking a school in the area, is the publication, each year, of a Directory of Schools. This is distributed to all BSME schools and to a range of other bodies that might find the information useful. If you do not have access to a copy of the directory, but need information you will find much of the content on this site; this can be accessed via the 'Find Member School' menu to the left of this text.
In late April 2006, BSME held a one-day conference at which many member schools discussed and explored possible futures for BSME. The enthusiasm of participants and the nature of the debates at the conference demonstrated just how deeply committed BSME heads and senior managers are to their schools and to the interests of the children in their care. The efforts everyone present put in on that day and the energy that many will expend in working groups, will undoubtedly lead to an enhancement of education for children and young people in our schools.
In short, we see a future, building on the progress that has been made in areas such as professional development and the BSME Junior Games, in which BSME offers many more services to students, teachers, parents and heads of member schools. We are clearly entering a new and exciting period for BSME and for education in our region!
