DESS – learning together - high expectations - celebrating success.
Doha English Speaking School is the oldest and most established British curriculum primary school in Qatar. It is a non-profit making British Embassy sponsored organisation, following the National curriculum for England. It is staffed entirely by Department for Education and Skills registered teachers with UK experience.
The school provides education for those who are fluent English speakers. The pupil roll is approximately 65% British, 5% Qatari and 30% others. It operates effectively as a high quality British primary school overseas, rather than as an international school. Standards are high, significantly above UK averages in the public examinations. Staff training by quality educational trainers is regular and focussed on current priorities. DESS is the largest feeder school to Doha College.
The facilities are excellent. They include: an extensive library, 2 sports hall, tennis courts and a shaded swimming pool; an ICT suite of 25 networked computers; specialist rooms for science, cookery, design technology and art; 30 fully networked classrooms, each with its own computers, a separate play area for the nursery children; the only grassed pitch in the primary sector in Qatar.
The staff includes a team specialists for Music, PE, SEN and French. Class sizes are restricted to 20 in Early Years/KS1 and 24 in KS2. The Learning Support Department provides support for pupils with specific learning difficulties and those with abilities outside the normal range.
The school places the highest priority on the development of the whole child whilst delivering the highest standards possible. We see parents as essential partners in this process and encourage an open school philosophy.
