The British International School, Jeddah offers a British-style education to boys and girls from Pre-school to IB (approximately pre-K to Grade 12) levels. The medium of instruction is English. Teachers are recruited from a number of countries with the majority being British.
On completing Year 9, students prepare for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education through Cambridge International Examinations. After completing their IGCSE students may then apply to continue at the school in the IB programme for a further two years of study.
School terms are similar to the three terms of the UK system, with some flexibility to accommodate the Islamic calendar. With slight variations, the school day runs from 08.00 to 15:30, with many weekly afternoon clubs and activities to choose from.
Housed on a purpose-built campus, the school has two separate sections, each with its own individual buildings, play areas and administration. There are some 90 rooms, eight science laboratories, five computer rooms, a large sports hall, a gymnasium, a multi-purpose hall, a refectory, three libraries, a clinic, two pools and an outside sports area with running circuit and 100m sprint track.
Whilst the school is of mixed-ability intake, new applicants must produce their most recent school reports, and undergo admission interviews to establish the appropriate placements, to identify any EFL or SEN problems, and to gauge the degree to which the school could accommodate them.
Recently the school has had waiting lists for a number of grade levels, and it is essential to make enquiries about the availability of places before any commitment to a move to Jeddah. Places for new external applicants to the IGCSE courses and the IB Diploma are few; students wishing to enter senior classes are therefore advised to seek entry to the school at an early stage.
