The British School Tripoli was founded in 1968 with the support of the British Embassy. It is managed by a Management Committee which comprises seven elected parents and two co-optees. The British Ambassador is the school’s Patron.
As part of the school’s continuing expansion to cater for the growing number of expatriates in Tripoli the school will open its doors to Year 8 in 2009/10 for the first time.
The school is a non-profit making organisation and does not receive financial assistance, other than donations for specific projects. The school is located on Shara Ahmed Jezi between two arterial highways on the west side of the city. The school occupies two large spacious detached villas with an adjoining hall/gym and has a large playground with play equipment to the rear.
The Curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum. The Literacy and Numeracy Strategies have been adopted for Year 1 – Year 6 age groups. Foundation subjects are taught through the QCA Units, with an increasing emphasis on cross curricular themes. Children in Years 3 – 8 are taught conversational Arabic and French. All class teachers are UK trained and are supported by specialist teaching in PE, Music, Arabic and French.
The school’s PTA is proactive in organising activities for parents and children in the school community. A Spring Fair is held every year and money raised is used to buy new, or refurbish existing, resources. In accordance with Libyan Law the school does not admit Libyan national children.
The school primarily serves the British community although applications are accepted from Commonwealth, European Union and other countries. A maximum class size of 22 has been set for all classes. All children are required to pass a basic competency test in English before being accepted into the school.
