The school is located next to the US Consulate and occupies a well-resourced 40-acre campus shared with two American schools. Each school operates independently and Dhahran British Grammar teaches to the National Curriculum. The school accommodates pupils from Pre-Reception to Year 11 and typically has a school population of 400 pupils. The school is in its 9th year of GCSE examinations and is an accredited examination centre for Cambridge and Edexcel. National tests are taken at the end of Key Stages 1, 2 and 3. The school population is predominantly British and pupils are taught by suitably qualified and experienced staff who themselves are largely British in origin. The school has a relatively high percentage of sponsored teachers at a figure of 66% with just 34% of teachers locally employed. This is to ensure the continuity and stability of the teaching staff and enables a large number of specialist subjects to be taught across the school.
The facilities on the campus are excellent. A world-class purpose-built gymnasium complex, containing mini-gym and dance studio is just seven years old. The complex includes a 1000-seater theatre and cafeteria. A mini-theatre was completed in 2003 to provide a 300-seater performing arts facility. An all-weather Astroturf soccer pitch was completed in October 2003 and is part of a series of whole campus improvements. An additional 5-a-side Astroturf was also completed in the summer of 2003. A 10-metre four-sided rock climbing tower has just been completed and this facility will further develop the exciting range of activities we provide on campus for our pupils. The British School has four computer suites, two science labs, a design technology suite as well as two music rooms and an art studio. A Junior Common Room was constructed for our GCSE students in the summer of 2006. A library complex with over 100,000 books and reference materials is housed in a purpose built facility supervised by a Head Librarian and six full-time members of staff.
Class sizes typically comprise 18 – 20 pupils and each class in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 has a full time Teaching Assistant to work alongside the teacher. The Pre-Reception programme is housed in a specialist area and is staffed by three early years’ teachers. The early years programme is child-centred and child-friendly with the needs of young children at the forefront of the delivered curriculum. The school provides specialist teaching and resources throughout the school and these include physical education, music, design technology, information technology, French, science, Arabic, art, as well as business studies and the range of GCSE specialist subjects. Physical resources are excellent in all classrooms and specialist areas. Foundation, Key Stages 1 & 2 perform annual productions and a musical programme feeds into concerts performed over the school year.
School hours are from 07:50 to 14:30. There are breaks from 10:05-10:40 and 12:40-13:05. The children are largely bussed to and from school by compound supervised transport. Children typically leave compounds at 07:15 and return home by 15:00 unless they stay for after school activities. A school uniform is worn and all items are available from the well-stocked campus Academy Store.
From 14:30 – 15:30 a comprehensive range of after school activities takes place on four nights a week. A typical term will have in excess of 20 activities on offer and these are provided free of charge. A wide range of sporting activities takes place with team games to rock climbing on offer. Teams compete in tournaments with other schools within Saudi Arabia and they have been very successful in recent years. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is in place for pupils over the age of fourteen. To further assist the teenagers within the school, guidance is given at appropriate stages on careers, further education and (I)GCSE options. Work Experience is also organized and supervised to further cater for the needs of the teenagers within the school.
The school has a clear management structure that defines expectations for the taught programme at each Key Stage. In Key Stages 3 & 4 there are two managers in the form of a Deputy Headteacher and a Senior School Coordinator to oversee the specific requirements of this phase of the school. Foundation/Key Stages 1 & 2 are also supervised by dedicated Key Stage Leaders to ensure consistency and continuity of educational experiences. Expectations of homework and discipline are clearly defined but the emphasis is very much on praise with a merit award system established throughout the school to reinforce positive behaviour and approaches to learning. Regular parent teacher conferences take place and parent communication is encouraged at all levels. There is a strong tradition of a Parent Volunteer Group where volunteer parents are closely involved in the life of the school.
