The Foundation Stage curriculum is organised into six areas of learning: Personal, social and emotional development Communication, language and literacy Mathematical development Knowledge and understanding of the world Physical development Creative development
The Early Learning Goals establish expectations for most children to reach by the end of the Foundation Stage, but are not a curriculum in themselves. They are organised into the six basic areas of learning and provide the basis for planning throughout the Foundation Stage, in essence laying secure foundations for future learning.
The Foundation Stage programme develops key learning skills such as listening, speaking, concentration, persistence and learning to work together and co-operate with other children. It also develops early communication, literacy and numeracy skills that will prepare young children for Key Stage One of the National Curriculum.
The Key Stages 1 and 2 curriculum further develops the independent learning skills, knowledge and understanding gained in the Foundation Stage. Pupils are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their own learning, preparing them for the subject specialist teaching of Key Stage 3. At the end of Key Stage 2 in Year 6, children take the Key Stage 2 Standard Attainment Tests (SATs) in Mathematics, English and Science. These tests are set by the Qualifications Curriculum Authority (QCA) and the results, when combined with teacher assessments, will determine each pupil’s level of achievement in the core subjects.
The timetable is arranged so that there is a balance of subjects across the week with PE, music and languages taught by specialist teachers.
The curriculum is divided into the following subjects: Core English Mathematics Science
Foundation Geography History ICT Music Physical Education Arabic Islamic Studies Design & Technology Art Modern Foreign Languages
