This practical course will examine how we can work with a number of strategies to enhance the learning experience of bilingual pupils in KS2. Drawing on academic research but rooted in practical classroom application we will look at how practitioners can make the implicit explicit in terms of language development in the classroom.

Session 1: How do children acquire English as an additional language (EAL)? In this session we examine some of the key theories that underpin EAL pedagogy and practice.

Session 2: Using the task to shape the talk. Understanding the register continuum and how talk changes depending on who, what and why we are communicating is an important part of pupils' oracy development. In this session we explore a number of practical strategies to use in the classroom.

Session 3: Using multimodal literacy to make language explicit. How language works to make meaning and enabling pupils to understand what they are hearing or viewing is the basis of this session. We look at a number of texts and explore how they work to make meaning.

Session 4: Developing reading in multilingual classrooms. This session will look at before, during and after reading strategies that can be used to enhance understanding, foster creativity and hook pupils' imagination.

Session 5: Exploring the features of academic writing. This session will look at how we can develop vocabulary and grammar at the word, sentence and text level through the use of inclusive texts.
