Season Two, Episode Six | Whose Stories Are We Telling?

Every curriculum involves choices. From the histories we teach to the perspectives we introduce, what students learn, and just as importantly, what they don't, can shape how they understand themselves and the world around them.

In this episode of BSME Talks, we're joined by Emily Folorunsho from Aldar Training Academy to explore diversity, representation and inclusion within the curriculum, and what it really means to move beyond tokenism towards meaningful change.

Drawing on Emily's work in this area and her previous contributions to the BSME DEI Network, we discuss why curriculum sequencing matters, how British international schools can better reflect the cultures and experiences of their communities, and the importance of recognising the voices and perspectives that may be missing.

We also explore some of the practical challenges educators face, from navigating difficult conversations and overcoming the fear of getting things wrong, to identifying meaningful changes teachers can make within their own classrooms, even when they don't have the authority to reshape the wider curriculum.

Ultimately, this conversation asks an important question: What do we want young people to take away from the curriculum they've experienced, and how can we ensure every student has the opportunity to see themselves and others reflected in their learning?
